    What is Chai Spice?

Chai spice is a blend of spices with a uniquely warm and lightly spicy flavor. In India, it was originally enjoyed as part of a healing beverage and later in tea. The spices in it can vary, but it typically includes cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and cloves.

    About Homemade Chai Spice

    • Taste - Our homemade chai seasoning mix is sweet, warm, and a little spicy.
    • Texture - The ingredients are ground, light, and powdery.
    • Effort - Just mix the ingredients then use it or store it for later.
    • Time - It takes just 5 minutes to mix.

    Ingredients

Ingredients for chai spice mix, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, allspice, ginger, and cloves.
    • Cinnamon - Cinnamon has a warm and woodsy flavor.
    • Ginger - Ginger provides a pungent spice.
    • Cardamom - Cardamom is sweet and aromatic with a little spice.
    • Nutmeg - Nutmeg has a nutty sweetness.
    • Cloves - Cloves are warm, spicy, and pungent.
    • Allspice - Allspice provides a unique earthiness.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Variations

    • Freshly ground black pepper - Pepper will add a little extra spice.
    • Fennel seeds - Fennel seeds add a sweet and light licorice-like flavor.
    • Star anise - Add star anise for a stronger licorice flavor.
    • Vanilla - Add vanilla powder and sugar for a sweet variation.
    • Pumpkin pie spice - Check out our pumpkin spice recipe. It is similar to chai spice, but we omit the cardamom.

    Instructions

Whisk cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, all-spice, ginger, and cloves in a bowl to make chai spice mix.

Add spices to a small bowl and whisk or stir until combined. Store in an airtight container.

Pro tip - Transfer the spice blend to cute glass jars with ribbon or twine for a fun homemade gift.

    Storage

Store leftover chai seasoning mix in an air-tight container at room temperature in a cool place for up to 3 months for best results. After a few months, the spice mixture will begin to be less potent.

    Top Tips

    • Experiment with different spices and flavors to find the perfect combination of flavors for you.
    • Taste the spices before you use it to make sure it has your desired flavor. You can adjust the ingredients accordingly.
