Our pizza sauce recipe features classic Italian flavors and is the base for our Margherita and Italian Sausage Pizzas. But the possibilities are endless with this vibrant sauce. We suggest making a big batch and keeping it on hand to experiment with new pizzas or if you need a pasta sauce in a pinch.

If you are looking for other pasta and dipping sauce recipes, try our classic pomodoro or garlic parmesan sauce.

Why You'll Love This Pizza Sauce

    • Taste - The mixture of freshly crushed tomatoes, minced garlic, and olive oil is a symphony of classic Italian flavors.
    • Texture - The sauce is smooth and light.
    • Effort - All you need to do is crush the tomatoes and mix them with the other ingredients. It takes just 5 minutes to make.

    Key Ingredients

Ingredients for homemade pizza sauce, crushed tomatoes, kosher salt, olive oil, garlic.
    • Tomatoes - We love San Marzano tomatoes because of their lightly sweet flavor. You can also use Roma tomatoes if you prefer a more acidic tomato with robust flavor.
    • Olive oil - Olive oil is tasty and smooths out the sauce.
    • Garlic cloves - Garlic cloves provide the quintessential aroma.
    • Salt - Kosher salt or sea salt season the sauce and complement the tomatoes.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Substitutions/Variations

    • Fresh basil - Basil will add an herby freshness to the sauce.
    • Spicy - Add red pepper flakes for some heat.

    How to Make Pizza Sauce

Steps to make homemade pizza sauce, add crushed tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, and salt to a bowl and whisk until combined, then use on pizza.
    • Mix ingredients in a bowl - In a bowl, mix the crushed tomatoes, minced garlic, and extra virgin olive oil until combined. Then salt to taste. (Photo 1, 2, and 3)
    • Enjoy sauce - Use as a pizza sauce, dipping sauce for garlic knots, or a simple pasta sauce. (Photo 4)

Pro tip - Since this is such a simple sauce, be sure to use high quality ingredients. The olive oil, garlic, and tomatoes should all have the best quality for the best flavor.

    Top Tips

    • Make sure the tomatoes are well crushed so the sauce isn't too chunky.
