Coffee Ice Cubes are an essential addition to iced coffee! Unlike normal ice cubes, frozen coffee cubes maintain rich coffee flavor without watering your drink down. With just a couple simple steps, you will never have to deal with watered down coffee again!

We love to drink iced coffee all year round. The only downside of iced coffee is when the ice melts and dilutes the rich coffee flavor. That's why we love coffee ice cubes and always have a tray in our freezer.

Frozen coffee cubes both maintain the coffee flavor and keep your drink cold. Try them in classic iced coffee, caramel iced coffee, or Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte. Enjoy coffee ice cubes in an iced coffee or in a glass of cold milk for a refreshing treat!

    Ingredients

Ingredients to make coffee ice cubes, including brewed coffee, sweetener, and an ice cube tray.
    • Brewed coffee of choice - Our favorite coffee for coffee cubes is ground coffee made in a French press, but you can use espresso, instant coffee, or cold brew coffee.
    • Sweetener - Some common sweeteners are sugar, honey, agave nectar, maple syrup, or simple syrup.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Variations

    • Flavored sweetener - Add a flavored sweetener, like caramel syrup, vanilla syrup, or hazelnut syrup, for added flavor in your coffee cubes.
    • Vanilla - Vanilla extract will add extra vanilla flavor to your brewed coffee.
    • Spices - Add cinnamon sticks, cloves, ginger, cardamom, pepper, or nutmeg to your hot brewed coffee for extra spice and warmth.

    Instructions

Steps to make coffee ice cubes, including adding the sweetener to brewed coffee, pouring the coffee into ie cubes trays, freezing the coffee ice cubes, and putting the ice cubes in a glass.
    • Brew coffee - Brew 2 cups of coffee of your choice (instant coffee, french press, etc.), stir in sweetener if desired until dissolved, and let the coffee cool to room temperature.
    • Pour and freeze - Pour brewed coffee evenly into a clean ice mold. Place in the freezer and freeze overnight (at least 4 hours).
    • Enjoy - When ready to enjoy, pop the ice cubes out of the tray and place in a glass, then fill with your favorite coffee and add your milk of choice.

Pro tip: Pour the coffee into the mold over the sink in case you accidentally overfill it or spill the coffee.

    Recipe FAQs

    Do coffee ice cubes work?

Yes! Instead of using regular ice for iced coffee, iced coffee cubes will ensure that your coffee doesn't water down as you drink it.

How long do iced coffee cubes last?

Like water, coffee ice cubes will only last up to 2 weeks in the freezer. If the cubes are more than 2 weeks old, they may get freezer burn and taste off.

How long does it take coffee ice cubes to freeze?

Assuming your freezer is the average freezer temperature (O°F), the coffee cubes should freeze within 4 hours.

What is the best ice cube for coffee ice cubes?

You should use full cubes. Since they are large, they will last longer and keep your drink colder longer.

Can you put coffee ice cubes into hot coffee?

Yes! However, we recommend chilling the coffee or at least letting it get to room temperature before adding the coffee cubes so you won't need as many. But if you are in a rush, you can just add coffee cubes straight away.

    Equipment

All you need for this recipe is a silicone ice mold or ice cube tray and a glass for your iced coffee.

    How to Store Coffee Cubes

Store coffee ice cubes in the freezer in an ice mold or ice tray for up to 2 weeks. After 2 weeks, the coffee cubes will likely begin to stale and taste bad. Note that like ice cubes, coffee cubes also absorb any other strong scents in the freezer. To help avoid this, use a lidded ice cube tray.

    Top Tip

    • Be sure to let the cubes freeze undisturbed for at least 4 hours. They are frozen when you move the tray and the there is no liquid moving in the cubes.
