Why You'll Love this Burrata Caprese Recipe

    • Taste - The combination of ripe tomatoes, buttery burrata, and balsamic dressing is rich yet perfectly balanced.
    • Texture - The tomatoes are juicy while the burrata is soft and creamy. The toasted baguette adds a crunch.
    • Effort - One of the best things about this salad is how easy it is to prepare. All you need to do is slice tomatoes, spread some cheese, and if you have time, make the balsamic dressing. When we are feeling tired or lazy, we use store bought balsamic and it still tastes great.
    • Time - It takes about 10 minutes to slice the tomatoes and layout the ingredients, then drizzle balsamic. If you choose to make your own balsamic, it takes about 15 minutes to make.

    What is Burrata?

Burrata is like mozzarella with its solid shell, but its center is filled with stringy stracciatella di bufala and cream. Burrata, which means "buttered" in Italian, goes perfectly on toasted crusty bread or on a bright, refreshing salad.

    Key Ingredients

Burrata Caprese Ingredients, including burrata, olive oil, salt, pepper, basil leaves, tomatoes, and balsamic glaze.
    • Aged balsamic vinegar - A rich, concentrated vinegar originating in Italy. It has a syrupy texture and a dark, bold balsamic flavor.
    • Extra virgin olive oil - Contributes to the base for the salad
    • Honey - Combine with the balsamic vinegar to make the glaze. The floral sweetness of the honey balances the other rich flavors.
    • Burrata cheese - A soft, flavorful Italian cheese. It has a mozzarella-like exterior and is filled with stracciatella, a creamy cheese.
    • Heirloom or Roma tomatoes - Both are intense and rich tomatoes that balance out the sweetness of the burrata.
    • Fresh basil leaves - Fresh torn basil adds a brightness to the tomatoes and aromatics.
    • Premade Honey Balsamic Glaze - The rich and decadent dressing for the salad that can be homemade or storebought.

    Substitutions

    • Fresh mozzarella - Substitute burrata for fresh water mozzarella if you prefer the taste to burrata.
    • Tomatoes - Substitute heirloom tomatoes for other ripe tomatoes, such as cherry tomatoes, pearl, Roma, San Marzano.
    • Arugula - Use arugula instead of basil if you prefer a more peppery green.
    • Truffle olive oil - Use a flavored olive oil, like truffle olive oil, for added flavor.
    • Truffle Salt - Use truffle salt instead of sea salt for extra rich flavoring.
    • Peaches - Use white or yellow peaches instead of tomatoes if you prefer the taste. Peaches will make the salad sweeter, but still delicious.

    Variations

    • Deluxe - Add prosciutto for a rich and light protein.
    • Vegan - Replace the burrata with vegan cheese
    • Nuts - Add walnuts or your favorite nut to the salad for a hearty crunch.
    • Burrata Caprese Toast - This caprese salad burrata pairs wonderfully with toasted bread. Just slice and toast an Italian baguette (or bread of your choice) then place some of the salad on the toast to enjoy.
    • Spicy - Sprinkle some red chili pepper flakes to imbue extra heat into the dish.
    • Sandwich - Enjoy the ingredients in this burrata caprese as a sandwich.

    How to Make Burrata Caprese

    Steps to make burrata caprese.

    Burrata Caprese

    1. Arrange tomatoes - Arrange the tomatoes in a circle.
    2. Cut burrata - Place the burrata in the center and cut open the burrata.
    3. Add basil - Tear fresh basil and sprinkle on top of the tomatoes and cheese.
    4. Drizzle and season - Drizzle balsamic glaze and olive oil over tomatoes and cheese. Sprinkle salt and pepper.
    5. Serve - Serve with a toasted baguette and enjoy!

    Honey Balsamic Reduction

    • Add ingredients to saucepan - In a small saucepan, cook balsamic vinegar and honey over medium heat.
    • Whisk and simmer - Once the mixture begins to cook and bubble, whisk and reduce to medium-low heat. Allow the mixture to simmer for about 10 minutes until it is reduced.
    • Allow to cool - Remove the saucepan from the heat and set aside to cool.

    How to Eat Burrata Caprese

Burrata caprese is great as an appetizer, snack, or light lunch. We love to pair it with a toasted baguette or a light pasta like our Healthy Penne alla Vodka. This salad also allows you to create the perfect megabite consisting of tomato, burrata, basil, balsamic, and the baguette. The flavor combination is exquisite.

    Storage

This burrata caprese salad is best served fresh. However, sometimes we make more than we need to and need to store leftovers. If you have leftovers, store them in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. Then enjoy within the next day so the basil will still be crisp and the toppings remain intact.
