Why You'll Love Green Tea Shots

    • Taste - Green tea shots are sweet and tangy with a hint of whisky.
    • Texture - Green tea shooters are refreshing and have the consistency of lemonade.
    • Effort - This easy green tea shot takes very little effort. Just pour, shake, and serve!
    • Time - Prep takes just a few minutes!

Where Did the Green Tea Shot Originate?

Jameson whiskey created the green tea shot and named it as such for it's green color. The actual shot has no green tea in it.

    Ingredients

Ingredients to make a green tea shot, including whisky, sparkling lemonade, sweet and sour mix, and peach schnapps.
    • Suntory Japanese Whisky - We prefer Suntory whiskey because it is subtle, slightly fruity, and mixes smoothly with the other ingredients. But feel free to use Jameson Irish whiskey since Jameson created this shot and that it is how it was originally enjoyed.
    • Sour mix - Sour mix is a yellow green mixer that consists of lemon and/or lime juice and simple syrup, shaken with ice. Sour mix adds a sweet and sour flavor to the shot. You can buy it in store or make it at home.
    • Peach Schnapps - Peach schnapps is a grain spirit flavored with distilled peaches. It's used in many drinks including the famous sex on the beach cocktail.
    • Sparkling lemonade - Sparkling lemonade adds a delicious lemon flavor and carbonation to the shot. It also dilutes the other strong flavors.
    • Ice cubes - Mixing the shots with ice cubes will make the shots extra cold.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Instructions

Easy steps to make a green tea shot.

    Homemade Sour Mix

    • Make simple syrup - Pour water and sugar into a saucepan and simmer on medium heat. Occasionally stir to dissolve the sugar. Once sugar is dissolved, pour the simple syrup into a glass jar to cool.
    • Add lemon and lime juice - When the simple syrup cools, add in lemon and lime juice and give it a good stir or shake.
Easy steps to make homemade sweet and sour mix.

    Green Tea Shot

    • Add ingredients to jar or cocktail shaker - Add whiskey, peach schnapps, sour mix, and 2 ice cubes to jar.
    • Shake mixture - Seal jar with lid and shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Then fill shot glasses ¾ full with mixture.
    • Add sparkling lemonade - Top off shot glasses with sparkling lemonade then serve and enjoy.

Pro tip - You can easily turn this shooter recipe into a cocktail by simply multiplying the ingredients. However, you should try it as a shooter first before making an entire cocktail (to ensure you want a drink version of this shot).

    Substitutions and Variations

    • Store bought sour mix - While we recommend making sour mix yourself because it is easy to make, you can also buy it at the store if you don't feel like making it yourself or don't have time.
    • Whiskey - Substitute Jameson or your favorite whiskey for Suntory whisky.
    • Lemon lime soda- You can replace sparkling lemonade with lemon lime soda, lemon soda, or lime soda. Lemon lime soda and lime soda will add extra lime flavor.
    • No ice cubes - Omit ice cubes if you prefer this shot cool rather than cold.

    Recipe FAQs

Does a green tea shot have green tea in it?

No, there is no actual green tea or any other type of tea in green tea shots. It is called a green tea shot because of its bright green color.

Will green tea shots get me drunk?

Yes, you need to be careful! Given how good they taste, you need to be mindful of how many you drink. While peach schnapps is a low alcohol content spirit, it still has between 15% and 20% ABV. When combined with whiskey, which has 40% or more ABV, it is enough to get you intoxicated quickly.

Where can I buy the ingredients for green tea shots?

You can find most of the ingredients for this recipe at large grocery stores. If you are looking for a specific whiskey or peach schnapps, you can visit a liquor store like Bevmo.

Do green tea shots have sugar?

Yes, peach schnapps and sour mix typically contain sugar. If you want to reduce the sugar in the shots, you can make homemade sour mix with less sugar.

Are green tea shots gluten free?

All of the ingredients in our recipe are gluten free. However, some store bought sour mixes can contain gluten (our homemade version does not).

How much do green tea shots cost at a bar?

Based on the ingredients, it will probably cost about $10. It will likely cost more in big cities or fancier bars. Given how expensive these shots are while also being easy to make, we highly recommend making them yourself at home!

What's the difference between a shot and a shooter?

Typically, shots hold 1.5 ounces of liquid while shooters hold 2 to 3 ounces or more. For these green tea shots, you need shot or shooter glasses that can hold 3 ounces of liquid.

    Equipment

This whiskey peach schnapps shot requires just a few common kitchen essentials. You will need measuring spoons, a lidded jar or cocktail shaker to shake the ingredients, and shot or shooter glasses (that can each hold 3 ounces of liquid or more).

    Storage

You likely won't have leftover green tea shots, but if you do, store them in the refrigerator in an airtight glass bottle or lidded jar for up to 3 days. When you are ready to drink them again, just pour them into shot glasses or enjoy it as a cocktail. This drink doesn't stand up well to freezing.

    Top tips

    • If you make your sour mix at home, it gives you the power to control how much sugar is in the mix and as a result, how sweet the shot is. It also allows you to adjust the amount of lemon or lime juice to your preference.
    • You can reduce the level of carbonation in this shot by substituting regular lemonade for sparkling lemonade.
    • Chill your shot glasses in the fridge before serving them. By chilling them you will ensure the shots are extra cold and refreshing.
