Crispy Baked Tortilla Strips are a fast and flavorful gluten-free garnish for salads and soups. The recipe only takes 15 minutes to make and yields plenty of delicious strips that add a nice crunchy texture.

    Crunchy Garlic Tortilla Strips

Crispy tortilla strips are a crunchy surprise in a bowl of Healthy Turkey Chili, posole, and tortilla soup. I even like to dip them in a little Greek Yogurt Ranch Dressing, although they are delightful on their own!

    About Tortilla Strips

These corn tortilla strips are baked in the oven and have the perfect crunch. They are less oily than fried chips and can be made as garlicky or salty as you like.

I got this idea from my mom, who always makes these little strips to garnish her amazing White Bean Chicken Chili! She bakes the strips in the oven instead of frying them to result in a crispy, light crunch.

    Ingredients

    • Corn tortillas - Corn tortillas are thicker and more flavorful than flour tortillas.
    • Vegetable oil - Vegetable oil fries the strips.
    • Garlic powder - Garlic powder adds the pungent and quintessential aroma.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Variations

    • Onion powder - Onion powder adds a light onion flavor.
    • Cumin - Cumin adds an earthy warmth.
    • Cayenne pepper - Add cayenne pepper or chili powder for a spicy kick.
    • Extra crispy - Cook the strips 1 extra minute to make them extra crispy.
    • Oil - Avocado oil or olive will also work to make the strips crispy.

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven - Preheat the oven to 350°F.
    • Cut corn tortillas - Cut the corn tortillas into thirds, then cut each third width-wise into ¼-inch strips.
    • Mix ingredients - In a mixing bowl, toss the tortilla strips with vegetable oil, garlic powder, and salt to taste until evenly coated.
    • Cook tortilla strips - Place seasoned tortilla strips on a baking sheet or sheet pan and spread out the strips so they are evenly distributed and not crowded. Place the sheet in the oven and cook for 8-10 minutes, or until lightly browned. Remove baked corn tortilla strips from the oven and allow to cool for 5 minutes then serve.

What to Serve with Crispy Tortilla Strips

These strips are delicious in Heathy Turkey Chili or any other hearty soup. They are also delicious on a BBQ chicken salad, Harvest Salad with Quinoa and Arugula, or with scrambled eggs.
