You’ll want to make this easy peasy drink for all of your summer barbecues!
If I were to choose one drink to beat the heat, it would have to be fruity sangria. The fresh fruit, chilled white wine, and sparkling water make for a refreshing spin on this traditionally Spanish drink. The sugar from the fruit and wine add flavor and sweetness without detracting the taste of the fruit. Pineapple Watermelon Sangria will make you want summer to never end! Each sip transports you to a tropical vacation.

When I lived in LA, my best friend Megan and I used to go to Malibu in the summer. This recipe is inspired by one particular beach day we took when we were home from college. We went to the market with Blackberries in hand to buy tanning oil, pineapple and watermelon spears, and Grey Goose vodka before we headed to the beach. We soaked the fruit in the vodka and ate it as we baked in the sun. While this probably wasn’t the brightest idea, we did discover something pretty life-changing: watermelon and pineapple go really well with alcohol. For this recipe, I've swapped out vodka with a crisp white wine and a plastic container for a glass pitcher.
Ingredients
- Sugar - Adds sweetness to the sangria.
- Pineapple - A strong and fully flavored fruit.
- Watermelon - A light sweet and sour fruit that tastes delicious when mixed with the white wine.
- Mint leaves - Adds a refreshing garnish.
- White wine - White wine offers a crisp, dry flavor that balances the sweetness of the fruit.
- Sparkling water/Club Soda - Provides the refreshing carbonation to the sangria
- Orange - Adds a mild tartness when sliced and used as garnish.
See recipe card for quantities.
Substitutions
- Red wine - Use Garnacha or Pinot Noir instead of white wine if you prefer red wine and want to make this a red sangria.
- Non-alcoholic - Use sparkling apple cider and flavored club soda instead of white wine and Prosecco to make the sangria alcohol-free.
- Ginger Ale - Replace sparkling water with ginger ale if you prefer the sour and citrusy taste of ginger ale to sparking water. Ginger ale will also make the Sangria sweeter.
Variations
- Less sweet - Omit the extra quarter cup of sugar for a purer and less sweet sangria.
- More bubbly - Add Prosecco if for a light-bodied and aromatic wine that provides frothy bubbles.
- Triple Sec - Triple sec is an orange-flavored liqueur which will add both alcohol and orange flavor to the sangria.
- Extra fruity - Add orange juice or pineapple juice to make the sangria extra fruity.
- Pomegranate seeds - Pomegranate seeds will add a tart and sweet flavor to the wine.
- Pear - Pears are sweet and juicy and taste delicious when paired with a white wine Sangria. Add them closer to serving so they do not become mealy and disintegrate.
- Apples - Add a variety of apples, like Granny Smith, Smitten and Lucy Glo. They can add a fresh dimension to the Sangria.
- Strawberries - Strawberries make a sweet and rich addition.
- Mango - Mango will add a juicy sweetness and slight tartness to the sangria.
- Peach - Peach will make the sangria extra sweet.
How to Make This Super Easy Sangria
- Mix orange, pineapple, and sugar - Add orange, pineapple, and sugar to a large pitcher. Using a wooden spoon, stir the ingredients until the fruit and sugar are well-mixed.
- Mix in watermelon and wine - Add watermelon and wine, and stir again.
