Customizable croffles (croissant waffles) Pinterest pin.

Croffles (Croissant Waffles) are buttery, crispy treats made in a waffle iron in under 5 minutes. Customize your croissant-waffle hybrid with savory or sweet fillings, from cheese to Nutella. They're family-friendly and a great on-the-go snack!

Crispy croffles (croissant waffles) stuffed with Nutella and strawberries and dusted with powdered sugar on a plate.

This is our favorite easy brunch and snack. We love the simple Nutella and strawberries combination, but they are highly customizable. Enjoy them with other sweet fillings like apple curd and cinnamon sugar or with savory fillings like bacon and cheese.

Whichever way you choose to make these croffles, they only take a few minutes to make and pair deliciously with a glass of homemade Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice, Caramel Iced Coffee, or a Vanilla Matcha Latte.

    About Croffles

    • Taste - Croffles have the rich and buttery flavor of a croissant.
    • Texture - They are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside like a Belgian waffle.
    • Effort - All you need to do is stuff the crescent rolls then cook them in the waffle iron.
    • Time - It takes about 10 minutes to prepare and stuff the croffles then about 5 minutes to cook them.

    What is a Croffle?

A croffle has the taste of a croissant and the texture of a waffle. Croissant dough is pressed in a waffle maker until perfectly crispy on the outside and tender and fluffy on the inside. You can make them sweet or savory depending on your preference. Our favorite ways to prepare them are stuffed with Nutella and berries for a sweet dessert or with meat and cheese for a savory brunch.

    Ingredients

Ingredients to make nutella croffles, crescent rolls or puff pastry, nutella, strawberries, pearl sugar, powdered sugar.
    • Crescent rolls - Crescent rolls are buttery, sweet, and little savory. You can also use puff pastry dough.
    • Nutella - Nutella is a light and creamy chocolate hazelnut spread that tastes delicious with the crescent rolls.
    • Strawberries - We love to stuff the rolls with strawberries or other fresh fruit for extra sweetness.
    • Pearl sugar - Pearl sugar gives the waffles a caramelized crunch.
    • Powdered sugar - The powdered sugar is a lightly sweet finishing touch.

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Other Croffle Ideas

    Savory

    • Prosciutto, brie, and fig jam or red pepper jelly - Spread fig jam or pepper jelly, then layer prosciutto and brie.
    • Crispy Spam, kewpie mayo, and furikake - Spread kewpie mayo, layer crispy Spam, and sprinkle furikake.
    • Turkey, pesto, and swiss cheese - Spread pesto and layer roasted turkey and swiss cheese.
    • Feta, sauteed spinach, and roasted shallots - Sprinkle crumbled feta and layer sauteed spinach and roasted shallots.
    • Bacon, cheddar, and scallions - Layer crumbled crispy bacon, shredded cheddar cheese, and scallion ribbons.

    Sweet

    • Peanut butter and jelly - Add peanut butter and preserves of choice.
    • Churro - Spread butter and sprinkle cinnamon sugar and chopped pecans or almonds. To make cinnamon sugar, mix ground cinnamon with granulated sugar.
    • Sweet almond - Spread frangipane and top with sliced almonds and powdered sugar to make a croffle aux amandes.
    • Apple curd - Spread our Homemade Apple Curd and layer sliced apples.
    • Pistachio cream - Spread pistachio cream and sprinkle with chopped pistachios.
    • S’mores - Spread Nutella and layer crushed graham crackers and a few mini marshmallows.
    • Whipped cream - Add our Easy Homemade Whipped Cream for an extra sweet and decadent topping.
    • Ice Cream - Enjoy these croffles with ice cream for an indulgent dessert.
    • Chocolate chip croffles - Add semi sweet chocolate chips to make these chocolate chip croffles.

    Instructions

Steps to make croffles (croissant waffles), unroll crescent rolls or puff pastry, layer fillings, roll, cook in waffles iron, and serve.
    • Heat waffle iron - Preheat the waffle iron.
    • Stuff crescent rolls - Roll out the crescent or puff pastry dough on a clean, dry cutting board. Add about a tablespoon of Nutella to each piece of unbaked croissant dough and add sliced banana or diced strawberries, if desired. Then carefully roll each triangle, starting with the wide edge of the dough and roll up to the tip of the triangle. Press a few pieces of pearl sugar onto the tops and bottoms of each croissant. The pearl sugar is optional but it gives the waffles a caramelized flavor and texture. For other filling ideas, please see recipe notes.
    • Cook - Brush oil or non-stick cooking spray on the hot waffle iron. Then place the croissants on the iron and close the iron. Waffle irons have varying capacities. We recommend cooking one croissant for each waffle compartment. For a waffle iron with a capacity of one waffle, cook one crescent roll at a time. Cook the croffles for 3-4 minutes or until the outside is golden brown.
    • Serve - Remove the croffles from the iron and serve immediately. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Pro tip - Only use an oil or cooking spray with a high smoke point  (e.g. avocado oil, vegetable oil, grapeseed oil) to prepare the waffle iron. Butter will burn the iron and the croffles.

    Recipe FAQs

What is the difference between a croissant and a waffle?

Croissants are made of a multi-layered dough while waffles are made of a batter.
Croffles are croissant dough that is pressed in a waffle maker to make it crispy with a waffle-like texture.

    Are croffles sweet or savory?

Croffles are sweet and savory just like croissants. Like croissants, they are also highly customizable and can be filled with sweet or savory fillings.

    Who invented the croffle?

The croffle was invented by the Irish pastry chef Louise Lennox to make a crispier and toastier version of a croissant. Her original croffle features avocado, tomatoes, feta cheese cream, feta drizzle, gremolata crumb, and toasted hazelnuts.

    Are croffles healthy?

While we wouldn't consider these buttery treats healthy because they are made of crescent roll dough, they can also be made healthier if you stuff them with fruits like blueberries, strawberries, or bananas and omit unhealthy additions like syrup or whipped cream.

    Storage

While these homemade croffles are best enjoyed fresh, you can also store leftover croffles in an air-tight container for up to 2 days. To reheat leftover croffles, heat them in the oven at 300°F until warm.

    Cooking Tips

    • Heat the waffle iron - Make sure your waffle iron is completely heated before adding the crescent rolls. If the waffle iron isn't hot enough, the croffles will be soggy.
    • Don't overstuff the crescent rolls or the inside will spill out on the waffle iron.
    • Keep the croffles warm - If you cook multiple batches, place the finished croffles on a baking sheet in the oven at 200°F. This will keep them hot while you cook the other batches.
